Thee Sheffield Phonographic Corporation - An Introduction
Thee Sheffield Phonographic Corporation We formed in 2003 to put out lots of lovely colourful 7" singles. Our first single was a one-sided blood red 7" by The Motherf*ckers called "I'm A f*cker", which Rough Trade described as "X-rated, reverb-drenched, slasher-movie garage." and Sandman Magazine simply said was "Wicked!" Our second single was by Chuck called "No, Not Ah!". Record Collector Magazine declared it as "nothing short of far-sighted genius" and The Fly said it was "Perversely, brilliant." Our next release was "A Box Of Odd" a great CD compilation of Sheffield surf/garage bands (Beachbuggy, Chuck, Special Agents, Texas Pete, GG Action, The Motherf*ckers.) The Sunday Times gave it 4 stars out of 5. Joyzine said it was "a brilliantly organised mess...full of energy, charm, and charisma." Our third single was by Champion Kickboxer. Their music is wonderfully individual, full of frailty, harmony and dischord. You could say they're a bit like a Medieval Engish version of Pavement. Of the single, Robots & Electric Brains Zine said "None of my words do the record justice. Here's one that does: Knockout" and Tasty Fanzine said "This is really pulled off with verve and talent". Our fourth single was "New Idols" c/w "Long Blonde" by The Long Blondes. This was their debut single, and shines with their own glorious approach to 60s style pop and art-punk. It's completely ace & the kids needed little in the way of promotion to help them agree. It sold out pretty damn quick. Next, we decided to do a fanzine. Thee Humbug #1 included an 8 track cd full of stuff like Ormondroyd, Kings Have Long Arms, Repomen, Apedrape Escape. The zine itself was a mix of victorian sillyness & fairly serious interviews. It sold out pretty quickly. Our Fifth single appeared just a few months back in the form of Chuck's second release. It is a double A-side of cossack-baiting balladry "Umm Na Nagay" and Pixies-style noise pop "We Got Squeezed (Inside Their Machines)" which Norman Records described as "like an outer-space McLusky, really good." You can hear the single at their website www.heychuck.com. Our second album was released soon after by the utterly barmy American country/folk singer Charles E Cullen. He's a bit like The Moldy Peaches meets Johnny Cash. Give the MP3s a listen on our website. Encouraged by the success of our fanzine, we put out Thee Humbug #2. It followed the same formula of daft victoriana and interviews with a great 12 track CD, including music from The Long Blondes, Arctic Monkeys, The Scarlet Tuesday, Harrisons, Monkey Swallows The Universe. This one sold out in three weeks and got several readio plays on Steve Lamacq's Radio 1 show.
